Jonas Makata

Satemwa, Malawi

Meet Jonas Makata, one of Satemwa’s 198 independent smallholder tea farmers who work with the newly developed tea variety in partnership with Satemwa. Jonas has 1 hectare of tea, and he has grown tea since 1976. He is married, has 5 children but lost count of how many grandchildren. Two of his children continue to depend on him and what he makes from the tea sales. Jonas gets a better price for his hand-plucked green leaf, which is processed in Satemwa’s factory, and shares in the profit when Satemwa sells this speciality tea.
