Description
Meet Jonas Makata, one of Satemwa’s 198 independent smallholder tea farmers who work with the newly developed tea variety in partnership with Satemwa. Jonas has 1 hectare of tea and he has grown tea since 1976. He is married, has 5 children but lost count of how many grandchildren they have. Two of his children are still depending on him and what he makes from the tea sales. Jonas gets a better price for his hand-plucked green leaf, which is processed on Satemwa’s factory and shares in the profit when Satemwa sells the specialty tea.

There’s a heartiness and warmth of this tea that I found both comforting and satisfying, even despite the warmer weather here in Toronto. I also really appreciate how easygoing of a tea it is; it doesn’t need any extra frills and withstands additional infusions just fine. I’m surprised that I hadn’t tried it sooner, but now I can say that I’ve officially tried all five of Tea Rebellion’s black teas!
